Basic Information
The Turner Katy Trail Shelter is a large,
two-story structure on the NW corner of Front and Wheeler Streets
in Tebbetts, MO that is available for use by Katy Trail hikers and bicyclists. Special
consideration is given to youth groups such as YMCA clubs, Scouts, church
groups, etc. When not reserved by a group the Shelter is available to individuals
on a first-come, first-serve basis until full. It has never filled.
The Shelter is owned and operated by the Conservation Foundation
of Missouri Charitable Trust, a 501-C-3 organization established by the
Conservation Federation. Tebbetts is a small town located on the Katy Trail
approximately 12 miles east of Jefferson City on Highway 94.
The Shelter has bunk beds on two levels (It will
sleep up to 40); groups must provide their own bedding or sleeping
bags, towels and toiletries. Most bunks have adjoining clothes cabinets. Other
amenities include a large table inside (and three outside), propane heat,
window air conditioners, refrigerator/freezer, microwave, bike rack, ping-pong
tables. The upstairs includes a panorama wall display of natural history
education posters. The Foundation has added toilets, hot showers and lavatories
and a bicycle repair room for users.
Bicycle Policy
There are bicycles available for use – free,
for groups staying at the Shelter. These are maintained by volunteers. Please
clean-up and replace bikes as you found them. If there is a problem
with any bicycle, attach a note detailing the problem so our volunteers
can repair it.
Key and Trash
This is an unmanned shelter. Unless other
arrangements are made, the building will be locked. The key is located
on a utility pole on the east side of the building – it’s easy
to find. Please replace the key. It creates problems if you forget. If
lost, call us immediately. We now have trash pick-up on Thursday of each
week. There is a large blue container in front of the building. Please
put your trash in it before you leave.
Fees
The fee is $5 per individual per day, or, for
groups, $20 plus $1 for each member of the group, whichever is lesser. These
fees help offset utilities, insurance and other costs to keep the
Shelter open for Katy Trail users. Please make checks payable to the Conservation
Foundation of Missouri Charitable Trust and mail with your reservation
request to the Foundation at 728 West Main, Jefferson City, MO 65101.
Reservation
Supervised youth groups are given priority on
reservations made at least 30 days in advance. Please include the
following information: Requested nights of stay – month, days, year; name
of organization, how many in group – boys, girls, age range, and
