WHEREAS municipalities across the state are constantly searching for better methods for wastewater treatment; AND WHEREAS, wastewater treatment plant outputs of nutrients are constantly increasing; AND WHEREAS, point source pollution into watersheds is a growing source of nitrogen and phosphorus which degrade water quality; AND WHEREAS, Missouri has less than 100,000 acres of wetland remaining; AND WHEREAS, wetlands remove excess nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater effluent; AND WHEREAS, wetlands provide habitat for many species of wildlife; AND WHEREAS, wetlands can also provide many recreational opportunities such as hunting, trapping, bird-watching, and outdoor photography for the adjoining community; AS WHEREAS, model municipal wetland projects exist in the state of Missouri, such as the Columbia city wetlands adjoining the Eagle Bluffs Conservation Area; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Conservation Federation of Missouri assembled at the Lodge of Four Seasons, Lake Ozark, MO, this 26th day of February, 2006, requests the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the Missouri Department of Conservation, and the Environmental Protection Agency to further educate, as well as provide support to municipalities for wastewater wetland projects; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the CFM requests additional support for municipal wetlands from private nonprofit organizations such as Ducks Unlimited and Delta Waterfowl. |
